In Cumbria permits or licences are needed whenever you carry out work on the highway. This includes the emplacement of anything on the highway that could cause obstruction or danger.
Builders' Skips
You can place a skip on private land without needing our approval but, if on the highway, you require a skip licence. Skip companies apply for a licence on your behalf. The skip must conform to a skip specification. If you do not obtain a licence then the skip may be removed and the owner of the skip could be prosecuted.
Scaffolding and hoarding
You can place scaffolding and hoarding on private land without needing our approval. On the highway a permit is required. In some circumstances we will visit the site to make assessments before issuing a permit so please ensure as much notice as possible is given.
