26/9/2008 - Crosby-on-Eden Tyre Blaze Update

A multi agency co-ordinating group met today to discuss the tyre fire at Crosby-on-Eden near Carlisle which started in the early hours yesterday .

The group endorsed and reiterated advice already given previously.

The fire is under control and Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service is expected to remain on site for the rest of the day.

An odour may remain due to the fire in the locality for several days but there is no cause for concern.

The Health Protection Agency has issued the following advice :

Very few properties are now likely to be close enough to the fire to be affected but ...

* If people can see or smell the smoke they should go indoors and close doors and windows. This advice is especially important for young children, the elderly and those with chronic respiratory and cardiac conditions.

* If anyone has any health concerns following exposure to smoke they are advised to contact their general practitioner for advice.

* Some black soot is known to have settled in the locality. The advice regarding home grown garden produce is to wash, scrub, peel before consuming. If there is any doubt about this please discard produce.

* There is no risk to drinking milk from cattle who have eaten grass with soot deposits on it.

The Environment Agency and Carlisle City Council environmental health departments are dealing with the clean up operation.
