12/9/2008 - New Cabinet unveiled for Cumbria County Council

Cumbria County Council's Leader Cllr Stewart Young has drawn up the portfolio responsibilities of his new Cabinet.

Cllr Young, who was elected Leader at a full council meeting yesterday (September 10), will lead a Cabinet of five Labour members after both the Conservative group and Liberal Democrat group decided yesterday not to put forward any nominees for the politically proportionate Cabinet which has been formed as a result of no single political party having overall control of the council and no political partnerships being formed between parties.

On this basis the Leader has set out Cabinet responsibilities showing both who will have prime responsibility and also showing which Labour Member will be covering the portfolio in the interim:

Finance and Resources

Cllr Stewart Young (Labour), Leader of the Council and Leader of the Labour group

Notes

The county council consists of 84 elected members. Currently there are 38 Labour members, 32 Conservative members, 11 Liberal Democrat members, 2 Independent members and 1 vacancy. A politically proportionate Cabinet would therefore consist of 5 Labour members, 4 Conservatives and 1 Liberal Democrat, however both the Conservative and Liberal Democrat groups have decided at present not to put forward any members for this Cabinet.
