Kendal register office is holding its first ever open day next Saturday (13 September), where it will be showing couples how they can have a 'green' wedding.
Green weddings are growing in popularity, as more and more couples preparing to tie the knot want the event to be as eco-friendly as possible.
The main aim of the day is to provide eco-friendly couples with a raft of ideas for gifts, transport to and from the register office, and honeymoons, along with help on where to get hold of invitations made from recycled card, and what food and drink can be sourced locally, which will cut down on carbon emissions.
Local photographers and florists will also be coming along to support the event at the register office in the County Offices on Stricklandgate in the town, and the county council is providing recycled paper goodie bags for staff at the register office to hand out to couples.
The open day coincides with Kendal's torchlight festival, when around 30,000 people are expected to visit the area.
Sue Oliver is the Superintendent registrar at Kendal. She said:
"A green wedding is a logical next step for people who are already conscious of their carbon footprint and are trying to be as environmentally friendly as they can be in every area of their life.
"We will be offering help and advice on how they can make the big day a small draw on the earth's resources."
As well as inviting would-be green brides and grooms to visit the register office on 13 September, it is also opening its doors to anyone who is interested in the work of the office or looking for information on the many other ceremonies on offer such as renewing vows and namings.
The register office will be open from 12 noon - 4pm.
