Council and Democracy

Cumbria County Council is a directly elected body providing a wide range of important public services for the people of Cumbria.  The Council also champions the interests of Cumbria at regional, national and European levels. 

The Council has 84 elected members, each representing a single electoral division.  The Council consists of 39 Labour members, 32 Conservative members, 11 Liberal Democrat members and 2 Independent members.

The Conservative and Liberal Democrat members formed a political partnership, established in June 2001 to run the Authority, this continues. The leader of Cumbria County Council is councillor Tim Stoddard and the deputy leader is councillor Joan Stocker. The leader of the labour group is councillor Stewart Young.
