Working with communities

The Council plays a crucial role in empowering Cumbrian people to help shape the future of their communities. We do this in many ways but this work is led through our Community Unit who work closely with Councillors to support communities and assist them to prioritise and focus their attention on what they really need. In Cumbria there are over 60 Neighbourhood Forums each meeting at least four times a year.

Our support includes:

  • a regular series of community meetings called neighbourhood forums
  • the award of over 1000 community grants each year through a 'participatory budgeting' process
  • further support to develop some third sector infrastructure bodies and their service.
