Governor Support Team - Welcome and Notices

The information and links on this website will support you and your school in becoming more effective and in improving the outcomes for children.

The Local Authority (LA) works in partnership with others, such as Teaching Schools, Cumbria Alliance of System Leaders (CASL), Local Alliance of System Leaders (LASL) and the diocesan boards, in order to provide  support for governors. More information on the partners can be found under 'School and Governing Board Support'.

We hope our website will help you to make the most effective and efficient use of your valuable time.

Our aim is to provide an outstanding service - your feedback on how we can improve is always welcomed.

In recognition of the frequent changes within the education world, we would like to signpost you to some useful information and reminders:

  • Minor amendments have been made to the Model School Complaints Procedure.  There is no requirement that schools use this model however schools are required to publish their complaints procedure online.

  • An amendment to the removal and disqualification of elected parent governors and staff governors comes into force on 1 September 2017 and is detailed in The School Governance (Constitution and Federations) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2017.

  • The National Governance Association (NGA) has joined with the Times Educational Supplement (TES) to survey the nation's school governors and trustees.  The Survey closes on Monday 17 July 2017.

  • The DfE have issued a Clerking Competency Framework detailing the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to provide professional clerking.

  • The Department for Education (DfE) have launched a new service Analyse SchoolPerformance (ASP) which will provide schools and other existing user groups with detailed performance analysis.  To help users familiarise themselves with the new system the RAISEonline service will still be made available until 31 July 2017.

  • 30 hours of Free Childcare for eligible families of 3 and 4 year olds - Frequently asked questions by early years providers - March 2017.

  • From 2016, the government defined a new category of schools which will be 'eligible for intervention'.  These schools are described as Coasting Schools.

  • An updated process for the appointment of Local Authority Governors with immediate effect -

  • National Database of Governors.  All governing board membership details must be collected via Edubase as a drive to increase transparency on who governs schools.

  • Governor Support Team Governance Survey, the process of Governing Board (GB) self-review is an important part of GB development and is often carried out using a GB Health Check which helps to identify strengths and areas for improvement for the GB.  Many GBs also carry out a skills audit to ensure they have a full range of expertise on their GB.

It is also recognised that working within a cluster of schools provides many benefits for governing GBs, chairs, head teachers and clerks.

In order to continue to promote the benefits of health checks and cluster working, we would appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to complete the survey which can be found at:
