About Adult Social Care

Adult Social Care is a directorate of Cumbria County Council and is accountable to the public through democratically elected county councillors.  The directorate's structure has seven main parts:

  • Older people services  providing assessments of need and arranging services for older people and their carers;
  • Disability services providing assessments of need and arranging services for people with learning disabilities, people with physical disabilities and people with mental illnesses and their carers;
  • Cumbria Care, the council's in house provider of care services such as residential care, home care and day care;
  • Supporting People providing financial help for people needing additional support and services as part of their housing;
  • Support services providing a range of in house support services to the Adult Social Care directorate and parts of the Children's Services directorate;
  • Strategic finance  providing budget and financial management support to the directorate; and
  • Strategic human resources providing human resources and workforce planning to the directorate.

The links below provide more information about the Adult Social Care directorate's role and structure including the directorate's vision and mission statement and details of the directorate's management team.

Children's social care services are provided by our Children's Services directorate which also provides other children's services such as education and schools.

People interested in any social care services can find out more through Customer Services at local Cumbria County Council Adult Social Care offices.  Customer Services can provide basic information about services and can arrange for people to see a member of our staff for an assessment of need.

The links to the right provide information about specific services we can arrange for people.  Most services can only be provided following an assessment of need from a social worker or occupational therapist.

If the assessment finds that a person needs a service, our worker can arrange for the service to be provided or the individual needing the service could receive a direct payment to allow them to arrange their own services.
