What support is available?

Some children will have had disruptive experiences in early childhood but are able to make progress in a warm and loving family who understand that life can sometimes be tough.  Sometimes children struggle and this struggle may show in your child's behaviour which might be hard to cope with.

We have an established adoption support service available to advise and support adopted children and their families in Cumbria.  In Cumbria we welcome all adopted children and their families.

Once the Adoption Order is made you can request an assessment of your post adoption support needs at any time.

If your child was placed with you by another Local Authority, and the adoption order was made three years ago or less, then you can access support from the Local Authority who placed your child with you.  After this you can contact us for an assessment on: 0303 333 1216 for further information about support services.

An assessment will explore how best to meet the needs of your child and family.  We can offer individual packages of support which may include:

  • Counselling, advice and information.

  • A dedicated duty line where you can get advice from a social worker.

  • Training events and workshops on topics such as managing post adoption contact, telling, building relationships and therapeutic parenting.

  • Evening support groups which are opportunities to meet and chat with other adoptive parents.

  • Stay and play sessions for new families across Cumbria.

  • An annual fun day and Christmas parties for both younger and older children.

  • An annual newsletter providing information about adoption and updates about Cumbria's adoption service.

  • Buddying up with other adoptive parents.

  • Advice, support and mediation with post adoption contact arrangements.

  • Signposting and support in accessing relevant services.

  • Access to family therapy and psychology services.

  • Direct work with children including life story work.

  • Assistance if relationships within the adoptive family are breaking down.

  • Advocacy and liaison with education and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).

  • Financial support.
